Special Business Unit (SBU) Workshop 2010

Date: 10 – 11 December 2010
Venue: School of Computer Sciences & Flamingo by the Beach Hotel
Organised by School of Computer Sciences, USM

The workshop aims to spearhead the initiative in creating a conducive environment to optimise the existing expertise at the School of Computer Sciences towards education business, business initiative and consultancy, and innovation and commercialisation. At the end of the workshop a strategic plan will be produced, which will be a blue print for the proposed SBU.

 

REPORT

Twenty three participants consisting of support staff and academic staff attended the workshop. The workshop started with the talk by En Khairul Anuar Haji Azmi of Innovation Office on intellectual property protection and commercialisation at the School of Computer Sciences. The event followed by round table discussions at Flamingo Hotel. During the workshop, En Khairul along with En Rizal Alwani of Sanggar Sains Sdn. Bhd. facilitated the round table discussions. At the end of the workshop, each group leader presented its action plan to materialise the strategic plan and later it will be our blueprint towards sustainable commercialisation effort specifically at the school and generally at USM.

Silver Prize of the 5th Open Source Software (OSS) World Challenge, 2011

Mr. Tan Choo Jun, a PhD student at School of Computer Sciences, USM, won the Silver Prize of the 5th Open Source Software (OSS) World Challenge, 2011 with his OSS package named “USM Extract”, a suite of soft computing and other data-based learning algorithms for Extracting information/knowledge from complex databases, which contributes towards the use of OSS-based intelligent systems in the KDD (Knowledge Discovery in Databases) domain.



OSS World Challenge is an annual competition on OSS projects hosted by Ministry of Knowledge and Economy of Korea. The main aim of the competition is to promote OSS development and to expand various exchanges among OSS developers all over the world.

Visit from Thaksin University, Thailand

: Visit from Thaksin University, Thailand

A delegation of 4 academics and 47 students of the Faculty of Science, Thaksin University, Thailand are going to visit the School of Computer Science, Universiti Sains Malaysia from 13.00 hrs to 14.30 hrs on August 18, 2011. The groups’ objective is to learn about teaching and learning Computer Sciences and Information Technology at the School of Computer Science. The activity will take place at Lecture Hall DK G31.

A group of 47 students, 2 academic staff and 2 technicians from Computer & Information Technology Department, Faculty of Science, Thaksin University visited our school from 1:20pm until 4pm. Our academic staff presented the research done in our school as well as the postgraduate programs. They also visited the research & teaching labs in the school. The head of department, Ms Ajaree Naco expressed her thanks and hope we can visit their university in the near future. Thank you to all for the work done.
